Our Mission
Our mission is to restore confidence, dignity, and cultural pride in the Black community by offering free, high-quality hair care as a form of community service and empowerment. We believe every child deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and crowned, inside and out. Through styling, cultural education, and the vast connections made in this process, we affirm the beauty and brilliance rooted in every curl, coil, and crown.
Programming Pillars
Cultural Competency Education
Project Crown’s Cultural Competency pillar educates youth on the rich history and cultural significance of Black hair. From African traditions and protective styles to the impact of discrimination and hair politics in American society, this programming explores how hair has shaped identity, resistance, and self-expression across generations. Participants learn how Eurocentric beauty standards have influenced perceptions of professionalism and worth, but also how reclaiming their hair is an act of empowerment. Through interactive workshops and discussions, we foster pride, confidence, and a deeper understanding of cultural heritage.
Creative Expression
Our Creative Expression pillar empowers youth to see hair as a form of personal artistry and identity. Participants learn practical skills for maintaining healthy hair, understanding different textures, and caring for natural styles. Beyond maintenance, this pillar encourages self-expression through braiding, styling, and more. Youth are guided to develop confidence in their unique look while embracing versatility, creativity, and individuality. By connecting hair care with self-love, we help participants express who they are unapologetically.
Business Literacy
Project Crown’s Business Literacy pillar equips of age youth with the tools to turn hairstyling skills into entrepreneurial opportunities. Participants learn foundational business principles such as pricing services, marketing on social media, client communication, budgeting, and brand development. Workshops also introduce financial literacy concepts like saving, reinvestment, and long-term wealth building. By transforming creative talent into income-generating skills, this pillar promotes economic empowerment and sustainable independence.
Our
Story
Jadyn Settles and Dorcas Mousas were two Spelmanites with a love for hairstyling and an aspiration to create social change. After connecting through their passion for black haircare, the two students became dedicated to bridging the gap for people who may lack access to culturally competent hair care. Today, they have improved the confidence and image of many students, unhoused individuals, and more throughout the Atlanta West End community.
